Of Magic and the Machine
Bearn Bringas Journal
.) We all ran down to the cellars as soon as we heard the Uruks coming in. Papa still isn’t here. We also don’t know where Uncle Faergen and Aunt Hilde are. Down here in the hidey we’ve got Mama, Uncle Jorgen, Uncle Haan, Aunt Olga, Astrid, Thorgen, and me. Mama says for me to write something to practice and pass the time. I wonder how long we’ll be down here?
.) We can hear the Uruks up above all the time. They are loud. We hear crashing and breaking every few minutes, and it seems like they get into fights with themselves all the time. Their voices sound like pigs, and they squeal all the time. I hate that sound. I hear it now in my nightmares. I wish they would just go and leave us alone.
.) Uncle Haan got into a fight today with Uncle Jorgen. He wanted to leave and fight the Uruks, but everyone else wanted him to stay. Uncle Jorgen got really mad; I was scared. I wish Papa was here.
.) Uncle Haan left the hidey today, even though Uncle Jorgen and Mama tried to get him to stay. We heard fighting just above the cellar, and we closed the doors to the hidey and sealed them tight. Now I can hear Uruks in the room above me; they are squeeling and breaking everything over there. I cried a lot today. I wish they would just go away!!
.) We are starting to run out of food. We only had leek soup today. We can’t go into the cellar to get more because there are Uruks over there. I heard Uncle Jorgen and Mama arguing over something today, and he hit her a bunch of times. I thought she was going to cry, but she didn’t, even though I did. Thorgen and Astrid won’t talk to me anymore, because they think I’m a crybaby. I wanted to sleep with Mama tonight, but she was sleeping in Uncle Jorgen’s bedroll. I heard them making funny noises. I don’t like Uncle Jorgen anymore.
.) We’re completely out of food. Mama caught a rat today and cooked it, but that’s all we’ve had for a while. Aunt Olga looks really sick and frail. I don’t know how long we will be in here. I hope we don’t die. Uncle Jorgen hit me today because I cried that I was hungry.
.) Aunt Olga died today. I cried a lot, but Uncle Jorgen hit me and told me to stop. He also told Mama to cook Aunt Olga! That’s so gross! I can’t believe it. We haven’t had anything to eat in a while, though, and Uncle Jorgen gets what he wants, so Mama did it! I puked it up when I ate some. I just can’t believe it. I want Papa! I don’t want to be here anymore!
.) We’ve been eating Aunt Olga for a while. Uncle Jorgen eats more than the rest. Thorgen got sick today. I don’t know if he will make it. Uncle Jorgen says that anyone who gets sick and dies will have to be eaten. I wish the Uruks would go away so that we could have some real food. Everything smells bad in here now, too. I try to talk to Mama but she doesn’t seem to be there anymore. She just stares into space and does what she’s told. I don’t know what to do anymore.
.) Uncle Jorgen said that Thorgen was too sick to live, and he killed him today. Mama started cooking him. I threw up the first bite that I ate, just like last time. I don’t know why Uncle Jorgen acts this way. He’s a monster. He hit me after I threw up again, and told me that I’m next.
.) No! No! No! NO!! Uncle Jorgen says that Thorgen won’t stay good long enough. We need some more food, and he says that I’m the one they need! I don’t want to die! I don’t want to be eaten! I want to go back to my room! I want Papa! I want Mama! I want these stupid Uruks to go away! I don’t want this to be happening!!
.) Please don’t do this… I don’t want this… No!
