Of Magic and the Machine

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

Fish in a barrel
It's hard to write in the darkness

[The writing in this entry is sometimes lopsided, with some words almost overlapping.]

Currently in a barrel. It smells and I may have definitely sat on something squishy I rather not know about. But I’m free…for now.

It all started when we got back from “Artemis’ Cave of horrible ways to die”. After what seemed like days dodging traps and horrible beasts we came up empty. I haven’t met this chick, but I hate her. I’m surely not the only one that does.

So we come back from this cave and the mansion is trashed. Furniture is flipped, doors are open and there ain’t a noise but our heartbeats. Courageously, I dash in to face whatever did this.

Inside the house, same thing. Nobody but us until someone fires off a darkness bubble. I ain’t afraid of the dark, but I rather not run into the couch so I run down a hallway. Meanwhile, m’Lord and Wynn casually stroll in and find one of the maids.

According to her they took everyone. “They” being the citizens guard. Apparently they want us to pay them a visit. They could’ve just left a message, if that’s all they wanted! Oy, they did…stuck to a knife on the front door. I’d say they don’t want to just have a chat.

We fixed up as best we could and next day they come back. “They” being dozens of the guard. Saying all they want to do is discuss what happened at the club the other night. But they don’t need to take us anywhere for that! Sensing danger, I courageously volunteered to stay behind and lead rescue efforts while the rest of the group went. So me, Antonia and the ladies hid in the basement.

It almost worked until the maid gave us out. Antonia got taken by the guard, leaving me with a maid, a princess and Loralel. So it’s all up to me to rescue the group.

Plan A is trying to contact that dwarf up in the guild hall. Maybe he can be convinced to find a way to free them…and then we lay low, maybe in that trap infested cave. Or leave! With the mansion destroyed I don’t think there’s anything tying us down.

Plan B is get Barry, cause a distraction and…rescue them somehow. Still working on that one.

Today was a good day

There I was, getting ready to rescue everyone. Lorelel and I put on our fanciest wardrobe and we rode out to the Guild Hall to… see what we could do. Plans would be made along the way.

The moment we even get close to the Guild Hall, we get stopped by the guard. While I was the most dapper halfling in all of Dalasmark, my companion was… decidedly less charming. Luckily, my charm was enough for both of us, and I was able to stave off the guard enough that we didn’t get arrested on the spot. Instead, some blowhard made it his personal mission to ruin our day, and went looking for someone to rat on us.

Not much time passes before we see the band walking our way from the Guild Hall. For some reason the guards start bickering with each other, and the guard that wanted to get us arrested gets arrested instead. Sometimes everything turns out alright.

Then the guard decided to…guard us? So Lorelel and I had to keep our act up and get a room in an inn while the rest of the group went to the mansion. After enjoying the accommodations for the rest of the day, we headed back to regroup.

But while I was enjoying my afternoon, the rest of the party had a pretty eventful day. Seems Antonia knows some big shot, and that’s how we got the guard to lay off. Gaerwen got his ass beat… again. How did he manage, I don’t know. But it’s like he asks for it.

So yeah, great day. Now we have to get out of here before we get chased out. But first we have to find this Artemis lady and then we can forget about this town. Totally wanted to delve into the sewers one more time before we left. Why couldn’t she hide out in a fancy inn?

Eight heads are better than five
It's over... for now

Hard to believe but… I think we are done with this stinking cave. Searching for this Artemis chick ran into:

  • Slime
  • Vampires
  • Skeletons (in the burly and skinny varieties)
  • Different slime that is somehow worse
  • Giant robots
  • Cloakers :[
  • Giant mushrooms
  • Half of the citizen’s guard
  • So… many… traps
  • A hydra

But, somehow, we yet live. That last one was no jest, no. I was stuck between a hydra and a hard place for most of the battle while everyone just went to town on it. And it could take a beating too. It was set on fire, got its heads cut off, shot, stabbed… I screamed really loud at it (tends to work with most things). It ended when Antonia fired a shot and it just dropped dead. Not very dramatic… but after being used as a chew toy, I’m fine with skipping the drama.

Despite going through all that we didn’t find Artemis. Well, maybe we did find some of her. No clue if she made it out alive by herself when we barely did with our group of hardened warriors. Last sign of her pointed West, towards the Labyrinth. Ominous, but any route out of Dalasmark sounds fantastic at this point.

Well, do excuse me while I start carving some hydra trophies. Is hydra meat a delicacy? Might as well stock up on that too…
